Distinguishes type from stereotype
The signifiers of this culture of my findings are : bucket hat, dreads, nike airforce '01 sneakers, oversized, flamboyant colour scheme, flashy accessories, tattoos and that the biggest part of the group are Afro Americans.

For this group (Afro Americans) was music (rap) a way of expressing themselves. Rap music is a balance between speech, prose, poetry and vocals. Within the knowledge of rap there are also lots of different styles like urban, grime, g-funk etc..

ASSIGNMENT 4
Instruction on how to understand our social group, their, (visual) codes and behaviour on 3 levels of understanding
ASSIGNMENT 3
1.1 My personal interest in this group is the self expression with their style. The part that we see as fashion. I can relate to this since we are all on an Art Academy where everyone expresses their style of what they like in a different way, as we all do including me and you. But most of all I think on an Art Academy everyone is more conscious and expressive about it than everyone in their day to day life, in a way that 'Streetwear & Fashion in the rap culture' also does. Personally I don't feel that connection to join the social group, but that could be because it is a way of growing up since this is such a specific group that is mostly tied to Afro Americans which is a different culture then mine.

1.2 The assumptions are hard for me to speak out because some of it could be interpreted as discrimination, something I have been taught not to do or think. But I'm from a very conservative town (Staphorst) in the Netherlands where they have assumptions so I grew up in a community that has the assumptions that "black people", the afro American people among others are people that steal, have no respect because of the loud music surrounding them, and no hard workers. Which is ridicules that they have these assumptions because it is not true, and everybody could steal wether they have a white, black or other complexion etc.. this is not tied to any culture of whatsoever. And definitely not my place to speak about it.
3.1 The spread of this stereotype is happening for a very long time and it is all chancing step by step per decade. I don't think that there is any intention to it but that it's just something how people were raised and they don't even think about that they have assumptions.

3.2 Being discriminated is probably the most and important part of this social group since it happens a lot for Afro Americans. This probably overpowers our entire social group.

3.3 There are lots of cases where the stereotype is not true and everyday Afro Americans show it that the stereotype is false. Now they are much more in success with their music, and more appreciated.
1.0 "Everyone creates stereotypes. We cannot function in the world without them." (S. Gilman)
2.0 Signifiers that stereotype:
Objects and their meaning
3.0 The effect of stereotypes:
Power and discrimination

2.1 The existing stereotypes that I could find are among the once that I mentioned above, that the afro Americans also fit in the stereotype of being black. Which is probably one of the oldest stereotype out there, that is still happening a lot. The overall thoughts are rather negative than positive, but this totally differs in what culture you're in.

2.2 The stereotype of 'Streetwear & Fashion in the rap culture' is mostly connected to fake jewellery, fake expensive fashion brands and cigarets.

2.3 For me moving from a small town to the capital of Spain Madrid and then to Rotterdam I've spoken to a lot of people with different cultures and I've witnessed the stereotype mostly with discrimination sadly. Also there are some really good movies that show you the truth behind these stereotypes. I think we watched one at the academy during an elective.

But I must say that the most assumptions are from people from people that are very conservative, the rest of the world are changing to the future, a better future.
